A Pink Plea

For the last two years, I have participated in the Susan G. Komen 3Day for the Cure breast cancer walk.  I've pushed myself through hours of training and fundraising and plan on doing it again.  Due to recent events, I have been informed not to expect support from previous donors.  While it saddens me, I respect their choice.  You see, I am pro-choice.  I choose to put myself out there, asking for donations and walking hundreds of miles, for research, awareness, screenings, tests ... My mom and aunt are alive because of efforts like mine. Who am I to say that SGK doesn't help?!

Usually around this time, I've already started blasting all over facebook and email about fundraising events.  For some reason, even before the recent backlash, I've taken a few months off and just figured I'd hit the ground running in February.

For those of you who have NO IDEA what backlash ...

SGK announced they would not be funding Planned Parenthood due to an ongoing investigation.  All of a sudden there were posts about how pink shirts, spatulas, hair and what nots were not what breast cancer is about.  No shit.  From what I have read, the investigation was brought on because someone believes the money PP gets is being used to fund abortions.  Obviously, people are not aware that PP does more than abortion ... Like provide counselors, advice, information, contraceptives, education - TO PREVENT UNWANTED PREGNANCY AND ABORTION - not to mention providing healthcare for uninsured, low income - like breast cancer screening (granted, they only do the exam and refer out for the screening but whatevs) ... fucking jackasses.

I lost supporters because of the affiliation with Planned Parenthood and now I have lost supporters because SGK buckled under political pressure and broke up with PP.  Only to reverse their decision a few days later.

I don't know what goes on in those boardroom discussions.  I don't get my panties in a twisted knot because 100% of my donations don't go to research and testing. Show me an organization where 100% goes to the cause and I'll donate to them.  Until then, let's focus on the thousands of men and women who HAVE been saved because of SKG.  Face it, no other breast cancer organization has done what this one has.  Sure, suing the littles over using "for the cure" is a bit absurd but still doesn't stop me from my mission.

I am committed to continuing this journey towards eventually finding a cure for breast cancer, whether it be through SGK or another organization.

As my friends and family, I ask that you consider continuing to support my efforts. If you choose not to support me, all I ask is that you be nice and not insult my decision.

Thank you.
