Diabetes Update

Today I met with my endocrinologist, who is adorable!  I was referred to her with the last pregnancy and feel 1000% comfortable with what she tells me to do.

If you recall, I was diagnosed with Type 2 in November.  Being diabetic and getting pregnant means I have a lot of things to do, all for the good of this baby.  The two most important things are testing my blood sugars and taking my insulin.  Yep, I'm on insulin.  Apparently my gorgeous body is insulin resistant.  Yay me.  I test four to five times a day - when I wake up (aka fasting), after the three main meals (b/l/d) and before I go to bed.  I'm not that great about remembering the before bed.  Sometimes I don't test after meals.  Pure laziness or I know I had a bad carb meal.  Usually both.  This pregnancy I'm taking insulin before bed to help with my fasting numbers and before meals.  I'm not always good about taking it before meals.  I don't necessarily have to, unless there will be 30 grams of carbs or more.  So basically my belly and my fingers have become pin cushions.

Let's get to today's appointment and the reason for this post.

I had my A1C tested today.  Basically, the A1C is a three month average of my blood sugars.  I started with 8.1 in October, which is what prompted my primary doc to diagnose me with T2.  In February, before getting pregnant, I was starting to feel sluggish again so we had another panel drawn and my A1C was 6.5 WOWSA that's great!  Once we were pregnant, the endo's office drew it again (about 4 weeks later) and I was down to 6.  I was kept on Metformin (1000mg daily) and given the insulin at night only.  I had another A1C test in June/July and it came back at 6.7.  Totally expected since I had pretty much started eating crap since the miscarriage and just not giving a rat's ass about anything.  But this time, today, my A1C came back at 5.4!!  Freaking AWESOME.

Of course, that's mainly because I have had to restrict my carbs and sugar and don't eat nearly as crappy as I used to.  My numbers are doing well, even though I have a few "high" numbers.  Basically keeping 120 or lower at one hour after my meal is my goal and sometimes I hit it right on, below and rarely above.  My fasting is down below 90, provided I'm able to sleep uninterrupted or test as soon as I wake up.

Today's appointment was a huge relief!  I have been freaking myself out, thinking that I'm doing more harm to my child than I could imagine.  I guess reading online and joining online forums isn't the smartest thing to do.  I have to remember I can't compare myself to others because each situation is different.

I can't wait to have cake on my birthday!
